Florida (DMV) Bill of Sale Form for Motor Vehicle, Trailer, or Boat

The Florida DMV bill of sale form, or Form HSMV 82050, is an application that is required by law for the private sale of a used motor vehicle in the state of Florida. It basically works as proof that a purchase and sale occurred between two parties and insists on recording the details of the transaction. Important information such as the buyer and seller’s names, vehicle description, sale price, and date, and signatures of everyone involved are all transcribed to the form. This form happens to encompass more than your average bill of sale, not only the sale of a motor vehicle but also a vessel and/or mobile home. It also has a second function as a “Notice of Sale”, which would be viewed by the DMV to release liability from the previous owner.

How to Register a Vehicle

Read the following if you need directions on how to register your recently purchased vehicle. Go to a Florida DHSMV (Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles) office of your choice and bring the items listed below:

• Bill of Sale Agreement signed by both parties – in accordance with §319.23.
• A title that has been properly signed over to the new owner.
• Positive identification of the person registering the vehicle.
• Proof of an existing insurance policy.
• In the case that the vehicle is less than ten years of age and there is no room to note the odometer reading on the title, you will have to supply a DHSMV official with a Florida Odometer/Mileage Disclosure Form – Form HSMV 82042 (this also functions as a VIN Verification form which is needed if you are a new resident or purchased the vehicle out-of-state). This is enforced by law according to the Florida Statute §319.225.
• If it was an out-of-state purchase, you must complete a Florida Application for Certificate of Title With/Without Registration (Form HSMV 82040).
• Come prepared with the necessary methods of payment for any possible registration, titling, tax, or license plate fees.

How to Register a Vessel

Once a boat has been purchased or upon relocation to Florida with your boat, you have a total of 30 days to register the vessel. Make an appointment for an appearance or visit without one at your nearest local Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles facility with the following:

• The official Bill of Sale (Form HSMV 82050) notarized by an authorized agent or a Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO) if the Vessel is purchased new.
• A signed-over title with a completed Odometer Disclosure Statement (page 2 of the supplied bill of sale) if the vehicle is 10 years old or newer.
• A valid form of photo identification.
• First-time state registrations of a given watercraft will require a VIN inspection available from any are police precinct.
• Documentation of active boat insurance within the State of Florida.
• Monies for registration and tiling fees and taxes.

Once the registration is complete you will gather registration plates and stickers to make them visible on your watercraft. Renewal of the registration will be required by the month of birth of the owner the following calendar year. If it is owned by a company the renewal will be due in the month of June. During the renewal period, you have the choice to select renewing for a one or two-year period.

Step 3 – Motor Vehicle, Mobile Home, Off-Highway, or Vessel Description – Here is where you will provide the specified information required. Fill out the necessary fields listed below:

• Date of Sale
• Selling Price (in dollars)

Step 6 – Odometer Disclosure Statement (Required For a Motor Vehicle) – It is crucial that this section is carefully filled out as accurately as possible. Answer the following inquiries:

• Is the odometer reading 5 or 6 digits? (Check the box that applies to you.)
• Insert the reading into the spaces provided (do not include tenths).
• Insert the date into the available spaces (mm/dd/yyyy).
• Select the box that best describes your situation. Your options are: “Reflects the Actual Mileage”, “Is in Excess of its Mechanical Limits”, and/or “Is not the Actual Mileage”.
• This form provides an affidavit section that allows anyone participating in the contract to supply a written statement in regards to the odometer reading which can be used in court if need be.

Step 7 – Certification – This section is where the buyer(s) and the seller(s) will finalize the contract and declare that they have read the foregoing document and that the facts stated in it are true under penalty of perjury. Seller(s) shall provide the following:
